Although we do not know where or with whom Vermeer learned his craft, there now exists an wealth of scientific, art historical and visual evidence that demonstrates he possessed one of the most sophisticated 17th-century painting techniques. The Book of Kells is a medieval illuminated manuscript created by monks in Ireland around 800 AD. The lesson below relates to geography for the week. We want students to constantly look back at the object and draw the nuances of the lines and curves- simply as a series of lines and curves, not an apple. For example, if asked to draw an apple on a table, many people would look at the apple once, then keep their head down and draw what they think a typical apple would look like. People tend to draw the object they see in their mind rather than what they see in front of them. It is so, so, SO important to teach students to look at the object in front of them as they draw, and to study the lines that create that object. It also relates back to OiLs and the ability to describe and duplicate lines. The concept is about training our brains to see the image solely as a group of lines and shapes.

And, of course, I’ll update any necessary changes to the great artists lesson plans later in the year, most likely in the beginning of December. My plan for the next few weeks is to put out a few videos exploring how to prioritize great conversation in our art lessons. The lesson for week 2 is a bear drawing, and bears can be found in almost every biome, from Giant Pandas in the tropical rainforest, to Polar Bears in the arctic tundra. The drawing lesson for week 1 focuses on animals and insects, which can now be related to the days of creation. The drawing lessons for weeks 3-6 still correlate to the guide for that week, so that leaves weeks 1 and 2, which I had connected to the science memory work. With the 5th edition Foundations Guide changes, I know that many of you have also been planning ahead and wondering if I will have new lessons focused on the new guide.Īs I looked through, I decided that I will not be adding new lessons for weeks 1-6. The new school year is at my family’s doorstep, and I’m beginning to shift my thoughts from summer vacation back to homeschooling and lesson planning.
